Our June newsletter is food focused. Liberia imports 60% of its rice, the staple food in Liberia. Most Liberian rice growers are subsistence farmers, producing just enough to survive with little left over to sell on the local market. The legacy of war left Liberia with poor infrastructure and a lack of business knowledge, limiting farmers’ ability to grow and sell their goods.
Building Markets is laying the groundwork for developing an agricultural value chain in Liberia by partnering with key agricultural development partners, such USAID Food and Enterprise Development (FED), and small and medium-scale farms to develop their business acumen and connect them to potential buyers.
